GNED 1201 - Human Experience Through the Performing Arts - Course Description

 

Human Experience Through the Performing Arts looks at society through the window of the performing arts. Some sections may examine a particular period in time (e.g. The 1960’s: Decade of Change), while others may deal with a particular theme that spans a variety of time periods (e.g. Romeo and Juliet ) The course will be taught in interdisciplinary modules which may include Speech, Music, Theatre and Film.
Individual sections of the course will provide a detailed course outline specific to the topic which includes the cluster goals.
 
Course Objectives:
 
Through exploration of major works in the performing arts, students will:
  • examine the role of performing arts in the development of Canadian society.
  • examine cultural diversity through speech, music, theatre and films that are significant in contemporary society.
  • examine the role of the performing arts as a mirror to society which reflects social interaction, a sense of personal identity, and cultural diversity.
  • use relevant research techniques to develop information retrieval and analysis skills.
